RISPERDAL® (risperidone) is a medication that treats the symptoms of schizophrenia. Medications known as conventional antipsychotics were introduced in the 1950s and are still in use today. Risperdal is a newer medication, called an atypical antipsychotic. It has been in use for over 8 years and used by more than 10 million people worldwide. How does Risperdal work?


Symptoms are thought to be caused by imbalances of two chemicals in the brain. These are called dopamine and serotonin. Exactly how Risperdal works is unknown. While it's not a cure, it helps control your symptoms so you can start getting on with your life.

What are the side effects of Risperdal?

With any medication, some people have side effects and some don't. Once people adjust to the medication, some side effects may go away. Your doctor can also adjust the dose to help eliminate or reduce any remaining side effects.

The most common side effects that may occur with Risperdal are: anxiety, sleepiness, restlessness, tremors, and muscle stiffness; dizziness, constipation, nausea, indigestion, runny nose, rash, and rapid heartbeat.
