Premarin (conjugated estrogen) is an estrogen supplement drug. Many doctors consider that it is the "gold standard" for estrogen therapy because it is the one which has been on the market longer (over 50 years), and most of the research studies have used only this one type of estrogen to determine estrogen benefits, side effects, and risks.

What does Premarin do?

the medication is used to reduce the symptoms of menopause, including feelings of warmth in the face, neck, and chest, and the sudden intense episodes of heat and sweating known as "hot flashes." It is also prescribed for the treatment of vaginal dryness.

Along with diet, calcium supplements, and exercise, the tablets are also prescribed to prevent osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become brittle and easily broken.

Who should not take Premarin?

The tablets or Vaginal Cream should not be used if a woman has unusual vaginal bleeding, has or had cancer of the breast or uterus, had a stroke or heart attack in the past year, has or had blood clots, has liver problems, is allergic to any of the ingredients in the prescription or thinks she may be pregnant.

The most commonly reported side effects of the medication are vaginitis due to yeast or other causes, vaginal bleeding, painful menstruation, and leg cramps.
