Nexium 

Nexium (the purple pill) has been approved by the FDA for the relief of heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (or also called acid reflux disease) and for the healing of erosive esophagitis, a potentially serious condition associated with GERD. 

Nexium contains the medicine esomeprazole. Esomeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by blocking a particular molecule in a type of cell in the stomach, so reducing the amount of stomach acid produced.

If you're suffering from "heartburn" two or more days a week, you may have a real medical problem and need Nexium. Although some foods or activities may make symptoms worse, they are not the cause of acid reflux disease.

What causes Acid Reflux disease symptoms?

In the lower part of the esophagus, about where it connects with the stomach, is a muscular ring called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This normally acts as a valve, preventing stomach acid from passing back into the esophagus.

Acid Reflux disease symptoms happen when gastric juices containing harsh acid back up from the stomach into the esophagus. By reducing acid production in the stomach, the medication reduces the chance of acid backing up into the esophagus and causing heartburn symptoms.

Prolonged acid reflux can, over time, slowly wear away or erode the delicate lining of your esophagus. Only a doctor can determine if you have this damage. Nexium can help heal this damage. In clinical tests, up to 94% of patients were healed with the medication. Your results may vary.


Helpful Heartburn Tips

* Don't lie down after eating. Wait at least 3 hours after you've eaten before lying down.

* Avoid common food triggers. These include spicy foods, citrus fruits, onions, high-fat foods, alcohol and coffee.

* Smoking may be an additional aggravation.
