MACROBID
(Nitrofurantoin Monohydrate/Macrocrystals)

Macrobid is an antibiotic that is prescribed only for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (acute cystitis) or bladder infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria (Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus). It helps to eliminate the symptoms of urinary tract infections such as burning, pain, frequent urination, and a constant urge to urinate.

Important Guidelines for Macrobid

Patients should be advised to take Macrobid with food (ideally breakfast and dinner) to further enhance tolerance and improve drug absorption. Patients should not use antacid preparations containing magnesium trisilicate while taking Macrobid.

The recommended dosage of Macrobid is one 100 milligram capsule every 12 hours for 7 days for adults and children over 12 years of age.

Who should not take Macrobid?

This medication should not be used by:

* anyone with a significant reduction of kidney function
* pregnant women during labour and delivery, or when the onset of labor is imminent
* infants under one month of age
* anyone allergic to nitrofurantoin or to any of the ingredients of the medication

Doctors tend to prescribe lower doses of Macrobid for older adults. The drug is more likely to cause lung and liver problems in members of this group; and because more older adults have poor kidneys, the risk of toxic reactions to is also greater.

Possible side effects of using Macrobid
