Lipitor 

Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is usually prescribed only if diet, exercise, and weight loss fail to bring your cholesterol levels under control. It’s important to remember that Lipitor is a supplement, not a substitute for diet and exercise. To get the full benefit of the medication, you need to stick to the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor. All these efforts to keep your cholesterol levels normal are important because they may also lower your risk of heart disease.

Lipitor is a prescription drug in one of the newest classes of cholesterol-lowering medications, called statins. These drugs have been used widely for several years. 


What does Lipitor do?

Lipitor works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that your body uses to make cholesterol. When less cholesterol is produced, the liver takes up more cholesterol from the bloodstream. This results in lower levels of cholesterol circulating in your blood.


What is the dosage for Lipitor? 

Most people will start with a 10 mg tablet once daily. Your doctor will determine the dose that is right for you, which may be 10 mg to 80 mg. Lipitor can be taken any time of the day, with or without food. Be sure to tell your personal physician about all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking.  Your physician may want to conduct routine blood tests to check your liver function before and after starting treatment. 


Who should not take Lipitor?

Never take Lipitor during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. You should also avoid Lipitor if you have liver disease, or if the drug gives you an allergic reaction.

Possible side effects include diarrhea, gas, headache, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
