Celebrex
(Alternate name: Celecoxib)
Celebrex is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides powerful, 24-hour relief from osteoarthritis (OA). Celebrex is also approved for the treatment of adult rheumatoid arthritis (RA), acute pain, and painful menstrual cramps (primary dysmenorrhea). Celebrex has been widely studied, and is one of the most prescribed treatments of arthritis.
What does Celebrex do?
Celebrex blocks the action of the COX-2 enzyme, which plays a key role in pain and inflammation. Celebrex was the first COX-2 specific inhibitor approved for treating the pain, inflammation, and stiffness that accompanies arthritis (both OA and RA). Also, Celebrex treats a broad range of painful conditions, including painful menstrual cramps in adults.
Who should not take Celebrex?
Celebrex should not be taken in late pregnancy or if you've had aspirin-sensitive asthma or allergic reactions to aspirin or other arthritis medicines or certain drugs called sulfonamides. In rare cases, serious stomach problems, such as bleeding, can occur without warning. The most common side effects in clinical trials were indigestion, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
